1ST SEPT 2013 NOTE: ------------- BEFORE DOING A MAILING: - BACKUP THE CONTACT LISTS! BECAUSE INEVITABLY THERE'LL BE SOME CHANGES AND MAYBE SOME MISTAKES IF MOVING CONTACTS BETWEEN DISTRIBUTION LISTS! - CONTACT LETSHOST - A DAY OR TWO BEFORE DOING THE MAILING - ON A WEEKDAY DURING OFFICE HOURS. PREFERABLY ASK FOR DARWIN SILVA. ON 1ST SEPT 2013 HE INCREASED OUR EMAIL PER HOUR LIMIT TO 1500. IT'S ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE 150 FOR OUR HOSTING PACKAGE, AND 1000 FOR 'BUSINESS HOSTING', SEE http://www.letshost.ie/hosting-plans/shared-hosting/ SEE EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE 31/8/13 SUBJECT 'QUICK QUESTION', CASE NUMBER #WVM-716-53135. IF EMAIL, LIKELY TO HAVE LIMIT DECREASED AS ANYONE WILL HANDLE IT. IF THIS LIMIT IS SUDDENLY DECREASED IT'S A REAL NUISANCE SO CHECK FIRST. IF YOU ASK THE WRONG PERSON THEY'LL PUT IT BACK DOWN AGAIN, AND IT'LL MEAN DIVIDING UP THE LIST INTO 12 DISTRIBUTION LISTS AND SENDING A BATCH EVERY HOUR FOR 12 HOURS - A REAL HASSLE. ------------- SIMILAR NOTE FROM APRIL 2013: NB! In Jan 2013 Letshost had reduced the maximum emails per hour to 125! This caused havoc with first set sent, and I had to resend the lot, meaning at least 125 received it twice. Letshost 'made an exception' for us and increased it to 500 after I logged a ticket. CHECK BEFORE SENDING, NEXT TIME, IN CASE THEY HAVE REDUCED IT AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING! ------------- How to send HTML-style newsletters 1. The HTML has to be very simple and you have to regress technically about 10 years! 2. Create the html for the email using tables etc. 3. Open a new message in Outlook, then click Insert - Attach File 4. Select the html for the email, but make sure you INSERT AS TEXT (bottom right of dialog) 5. That's it! The images should be on the server etc. Just follow the form from the last newsletter. NB: BEST TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE NEWSLETTER HTML FILE AS SOME PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT REFRESHING PAGE. This was done from April 2012 edition. Each newsletter - still called newsletter.html - is now in its own folder, eg news0412 Re: backissues - make all the back issues available ONLY in latest newsletter. All the back issues should have just one link, to latest issue. Change colour of new newsletter slightly. Check all internal links when renaming and moving newsletters. NB: Also change link to latest newsletter on mailing list page. NEXT TIME: In the email html, the picture has a big gap under it, and the text runs too near its left side. Consider not using a table layout to improve this - though the html has to be very basic indeed to work in email. CJB 31/03/2012, 06/01/2013, 01/09/2013
